Domaine de La Solitude

Owned by one of the most ancient families in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the Barberinis have roots tracing back all the way to the 15th century. However, the family is better known in their native Italy, François Barberini who was born in Tuscany in 1264, lived in Provence for a few years. The most recognized Barberini is Maffeo, who lived during the early 17th century and was made Pope in Rome under the name of Urbain VIII. Two of his nephews became cardinals and a part of the family then settled down in Avignon. They were not well remembered in Rome, as they were accused of destroying antique monuments to recycle construction materials in order to build their luxurious palace. Today, Domaine de la Solitude is owned by their descents, the Lançon family. Brothers, Michel and Jean, have been looking after the estate since the mid-1970s. The domaine produces both red and white Châteauneuf du Papes, as well as multiple prestige cuvées, including Cuvée Barberini, a white wine, Réserve Secrete and Cuvée Cornelia Constanza, both reds.
